The Devil is in the Details…

I was responding to a comment from a reader of the post I wrote recently about the Constitution Party, and he asserts that she is aligned more authentically with the ideologies of the Libertarian Party based on specific observations he has made up close and personal, demonstrated by Palin in the past.

I disagree for the following reasons…there is sound logic behind Palin fitting ideologically with view of the marriage of church and state and as I was responding to his comment I thought it might be a good idea to post my response as a blog for all to access more readily – and layout why I hold to the Constitution Party being the political “glass slipper” for Palin & Co.

I respectfully disagree for the following reasons:

I am pasting only 3 elements from the Libertarian Platform Preamble that demonstrate the exact OPPOSITE of Palin’s values:

by Pastor Howard Bess

1.1 Expression and Communication We support full freedom of expression and opposegovernment censorship, regulation or control of communications media and technology. We favor the freedom to engage in or abstain from any religious activities that do not violate the rights of others. We oppose government actions which either aid or attack any religion.

Censorship?  freedom of speech?  Oh don’t even get me started!  She is the antithesis of supporting freedom of expression!  From her suppression and censorship of targeted books as Mayor of Wasilla, her tantrum over Letterman, and her attacks on bloggers who criticize her.  She has recently revealed this bias publicly although she has practiced it for quite some time in more subtle ways – Palin is definitely NOT a proponent of free and unfettered speech!

Let me introduce you to one of Palin’s friends and rabid supporter, conservative radio host Eddie Burke of Anchorage.  You know…conservative – republicans?  The party of “family values”, deep abiding faith in God, and all around exclusive patriots?  Yeah – THAT group.  I think those that you call friend and are freely associated with  - actually do define you and represent your veiws, especially when you are a public personality.  So NO – I do not see a sympatico here with the Libertarian Party values on freedom of ANYTHING for an individual!

Political Domionionists support freedom of religion ONLY if you are a) born-again; b) accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour; and c) are bi-lingual and your second language is speaking in tongues.

1.3 Personal Relationships Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should

have no impact on the rights of individuals by government, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships.

Political Dominionists have ZERO, zip, nada, no way in HELL tolerance fora remote notion of equality and legal recognition of homosexuals on any level – ESPECIALLY the acceptance of Gay Marriage!

1.4 Abortion Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith

views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.

Okay – do I even really have to point out why Palin and her fellow Dominionists might not be in agreement with the Libertarian Party on item 1.4?  They share as much commonality on Abortion with the Libertarian Party as they do on the issue of sanctioning anti-discrimination against Gays and the tolerance of Gay Marriage.

Do not mistake the reasoning behind why these people befriend groups.  The fact that she saddled up to the LP, is not in and of itself an endorsement of their ideologies. She, and the Political Dominionist Movement, have also climbed into the political bed with the Scientologists, Catholics, Mormons, Christian Identity, et al …all of whom will be Left Behind when the Rapture occurs (right along with the homosexuals, murderers and all around heathens)…but for now they are necessary to build a large enough base to garner votes.

I will submit that there are elements of the LP platform that would be congruent with her views and the views of the AIP with regard to independence for government control regarding schools, land, and taxes. (Don’t forget that the AIP is the Alaska Chapter of the Constitution Party) And I have NO doubt that the wingnut who started the AIP (Alaska Independence Party) Joe Vogler, subsumed portions of the LP Platform when he founded the AIP.

The devil really is in the details….

This may be more pertinent to the Constitution Party discussion, but do note that one of the bills she signed yesterday was:
HJR 27, sponsored by Representative Mike Kelly, reasserts states’ rights. The resolution reminds the federal government that the 10th Amendment limits the scope of federal powers to those specifically granted by the Constitution of the United States and no more.

    And she later tweeted:
Love those Fairbanks constituents who appreciate our Constitution protections via 2nd & 10th Amendment bills/resos event today Thnx Frbnks!

So she is on board with the 10th Amendment movement – which I do not think is explicitly religious, but I believe what they are doing is a twisted reading of the 10th Amendment – and has been gaining steam. And explains why she’s going to go support Gov Perry in TX who seems to be the poster boy for this movement.

Palin a Libertarian? No… absolutely not. Even if she were to try to gain support in the LP, there would be Libertarians such as yours truly who would be quick to disavow her.

I left the Republican Party in 1996 to escape wingnuts like her. Indeed, it’s because of wingnuts like her in the GOP that the Libertarian Party has grown to being a viable alternative in conservative politics. That said, there are significant differences between the GOP and the LP, and one of the key differences lies in the fact that we Libertarians protect and defend ALL speech; even the speech that many Christians may find objectionable. We’re also about the only political party around that generally sees no problem using the Second Amendment to defend the First Amendment.

    SwissCelt,

Your point is representative of what has happened to so many former secular republicans, and that includes people of devoted religious faith who adhere to a separation of church & state. As the evangelical Political Dominionists launched their community organizing efforts (that would put Obama’s to SHAME) in 1976, with their expressed determination to MARRY church & state, a new breed of lost republicans were alienated from their own to party wander aimlessly. My father was one of them who left the party after being a state delegate and even republican candidate for state senate in Anchorage, Alaska in 1990. He is now non-partisan…and I won’t say who he voted FOR…but I will tell you that it wasn’t Palin!

No…the ties are much more a continuing effort to merge the Constitution Party into the GOP, and this is a crucial time for the secular republicans to wake up – get back in there – and TAKE THEIR PARTY BACK! PLEASE!!

Or the GOP will go the way of the Whig Party and we will have a Christofascist Party in the GOP…
    Warm Regards…Leah
